Okefenokee Swamp Fire 75% Contained

FOLKSTON, Ga. – Fire crews were still braving hot temperatures as they tried to contain two fires in the Okefenokee Swamp.

The Honey Prairie Fire has spanned 150,333 acres and is now 75 percent contained.

Firefighters continued to mop up hot spots to hold the fire, but the winds were not cooperating, officials said.

The Race Pond Fire near Waycross is also burning in the northern most part of the Okefenokee. The fire, which started three days ago, has spanned 7,254 acres and is 15 percent contained.

Stephen C. Foster State Park remains closed. All canoe camping, day-use boating, and boat tours from the Suwannee Canal Recreation Area at the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge East Entrance are temporarily suspended. Swamp Island Drive, including the Chesser Island Homestead and Swamp Walk Boardwalk, at the Refuge?s east entrance, is closed until the threat of fire is over.
