JSO Sgt. T.K. Waters said 23-year-old Nathaniel Borden was having fun with his friends, hanging out on the Trout River Bridge very early Saturday morning, when he decided to do a backflip into the river. Friends told police Borden didn't come back up.

Officers with JSO's dive team located Borden's body hours later near the bridge.

Police said Borden, originally from California, attended the Commercial Diving Academy next to the Trout River Bridge. Calls to the school Saturday night were not returned.

"I probably saw him last night, and here it is, not even 12 hours later, this young man, who obviously motivated to do something with his life, is no longer here," said Thomas Crum, who owns Fela's Restaurant on the waterfront. "You know, it?s really tragic."

Witnesses told Channel 4 they saw boats from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Coast Guard as well as a helicopter circling overhead before finding the man.

Detectives said none of the man's friends will be charged in his death.

?It just goes to show: Young men, make better decisions, use good judgment," Crum said. "Even if it?s been done a million times before, life is very fragile; nothing?s guaranteed."
