Pawn shops look out for stolen jewelry

Burglars sought in jewelry store robbery Thursday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – When crooks grabbed hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of jewelry from Underwood's Jewelers early Thursday, it's likely they had in mind a way to get rid of it.

During this time of year, one way may be to pawn it or sell it online.

"There are some pretty slick people out there," said Jay Graff, of La Tienda Jewelry and Pawn.

Graff said it would be hard for the thieves to pass the jewelry off at his shop, given the amount and the high quality of the items.

"With jewelry, depending on the age, if it's a real high item and they are very young people, you can figure out these kind of people don't own that kind of item for real," Graff said. "We just pass on it and let them go somewhere else."

Graff said crooks will try, but they would have a hard time practically with items they may not know anything about.

"With electronic devices and computers, we ask the customer to turn them on and show us how they work," Graff said. "If they can't figure out how to turn it on, I absolutely refuse to take the item."

Pawn shops aren't the only place thieves go. Online is a popular spot, and there may be no way for buyers to really know what they're getting.

"We also take photographs of all the pawners, and if they refuse to have their picture taken, then we know the item is not good," Graff said.

Police are still looking for burglars who they said broke into an Underwood's Jewelers in San Marco.

One burglar was about 6 feet tall and 200 pounds, with a full, close-shaved beard and mustache. The second burglar was wearing a gray jump suit and carried a bag in which they placed the jewelry.

Anyone with information about the burglars' identities is asked to call the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office at 904-630-0500 or Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
