JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville Sheriff's office SWAT team spent much of Saturday night and Sunday morning negotiating with a man inside a Fairfax home, but when the standoff was over, the man was dead.
Officers and SWAT units responded to the 4400 block of Beverly Ave. at about 10 p.m. Saturday.
JSO Lt. Jesse York said it started when a woman approached an officer at a nearby Shell gas station expressing concern about the welfare of a resident.
York said when officers went to the residence the front door was opened, a shout was heard from inside, then a gunshot.
York said police backed out and tried to communicate with the person inside, apparently a male in his 40s, but after a couple hours it appeared the man was barricaded inside while armed.
No other information, including the identity of the man in the house, or his relationship to the woman who alerted police, was released at the scene.
While police activity at the scene was over by daybreak, no other information was released until Sunday night, when police announced officers found the man inside was dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His name has not been released.
