According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office,  Lance Kirkpatrick stabbed and beat 38-year-old Kim Marie Dorsey (pictured right).

Dorsey's husband found her body on the floor just outside the bedroom of their Southside home on Eastbury Drive when he came off a 24-hour shift with Jacksonville Fire-Rescue.

Detectives say Kirkpatrick used to live with the couple and had fallen on hard times. Apparently he and the victim got into an argument when Kirkpatrick showed up  unexpectedly at the home to retrieve some of his belongings, police said.

According to a police report, Fire-Rescue personnel were in the home when they arrived and had covered Dorsey's body with a bed comforter because she was already dead.

Police said there appeared to be broken items in the room, and they said there was broken glass on the kitchen floor.

Kirkpatrick made his first appearance in court Tuesday and was being held in the Duval County jail without bail.
