Ship that hit Mathews Bridge to return to Blount Island
The ship that struck the bridge was the USNS Harry L. Martin, a Sealift Command vessel that was being moved from one part of the North Florida Shipyards to another.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Navy support ship that hit the Mathews Bridge a little more than a month ago will leave a Talleyrand shipyard Monday morning and return to Blount Island.
A vertical ramp on the stern of the USNS Harry L. Martin hit the bridge on Sept. 26. It was being towed along the St. Johns River at the time.
On Monday, the ship will travel under its own power.
The damage to the ship will be repaired once it gets back to the military's Blount Island Command.
The Coast Guard is still investigating the incident.
The bridge finally reopened to traffic on Tuesday.
