McQuaig was a passenger in an SUV heading northbound in the left lane of I-95 during hard rainfall about 12:50 p.m.

Troopers said the driver, 36-year-old Robert McQuaig, lost control of the vehicle and began to hydroplane into the center lane. The right rear tire and quarter panel struck the left front tire of a car in the center lane, and the SUV spun around the front of the car and off onto the grass shoulder.

The SUV then struck a tree, spun counterclockwise and stopped in the woods.

Robert McQuaig was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with serious injuries.

Two children in the backseat suffered only minor injuries.
