Police responding to one man shot find second victim dead

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Investigators with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office called to a shooting of one man about 2 a.m. Saturday at Canterbury Gardens Apartments on Lane Avenue South find a second victim dead.

The first victim was found with a gunshot wound and was transported to UF Health with non-life-threatening injuries.  While searching the area, police found another man, 25-year-old Taurean Pitts, dead of an apparent gunshot wound.

Police have not released any information about a suspect or a motive.

The apartments have been the scene of other incidents and crimes in the past.

In May 2013, dozens of families were left homeless after a fire at the apartments; damage was estimated at $600,000.

Also in May 2013, officers used tear gas to get a man to surrender after a nine-hour standoff.  The man who police say was involved in the standoff, Edward Hicks, is charged with attempted murder.

In January 2014, two men were shot to death inside the apartments.
