Alachua County deputy arrested on DUI charge


ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – An Alachua County deputy was arrested early Friday morning on a DUI charge.

Deputy William Williams IV was booked into the Alachua County jail at about 2:30 a.m.

According to the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, a deputy found Williams' pickup truck stopped on the sidewalk and bike path in the 9100 block of West Newberry Road at about 1:30 a.m.

The deputy saw Williams leaning out of the truck's drivers side vomiting, and when he approached the truck, he noticed a strong odor of alcohol from Williams and also recognized him as a fellow deputy, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The deputy saw Williams take the keys from his pants pocket and throw them into the bed of the truck, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The deputy's supervisor and a Florida Highway Patrol trooper later arrived, and Williams was arrested.

The Sheriff's Office said it will now begin an internal investigation into Williams' arrest. It said the investigation will run parallel with the criminal case.

Williams has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigations.
