They said Nitori Davis was found lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his left leg. He was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with non-life-threatening injuries.

Two witnesses told officers Davis accidentally shot himself while pulling a handgun out of his pocket, police said. They said one witness took the gun back to Davis' home, where officers found the witness.

As Davis was discharged from the hospital, he was arrested on a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Davis told police he was in the apartment parking lot when two teens walked up the sidewalk and got within 12-15 feet of him, then one of them fired three shots at Davis and the two witnesses, according to a police report.

Davis told police he quickly realized he was shot and fell to the ground as the two teens ran south on Old Kings Road South.

"The victim stuck to his story even after being advised of the charges and the witness accounts of the incident," the arresting officer wrote in the police report.

Davis was booked into the Duval County jail.
