Family pleads for shooter to come forward in man's killing

Tony Holmes, 21, gunned down Sunday on Moncrief Drive

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A north side family is desperate for answers as they prepare to bury Tony Holmes, a 21-year-old man gunned down on Moncrief Drive.

Holmes' body was found around 8 a.m. Sunday. Neighbors reported hearing gunshots around 5 that same morning.

News4Jax learned Holmes became a dad two months ago. His family said the person who killed him is coldhearted and evil. And now they want answers and justice for both Tony and his little girl.

Tony's sister, Brittany, said she can't sleep knowing that her brother's killer is still roaming the streets.

"I ran outside and I ended up screaming in the car," said Brittany, who didn't want to reveal her last name. "I had to park at a gas station because I couldn't pull myself together. It took a complete stranger to call my family to come get me."

Their stepmother, Zharvellis Holmes, said so far investigators don't have any leads and she's frustrated.

"They haven't said anything,," she said.

The family said Tony loved basketball and was family-focused. After the recent birth of his daughter, his sister said he was eager to share every milestone.

"He was like, 'Sis, you've got to see my little girl. She does this and she does that.' He talked about her so much," Brittany said.

The family is now asking that the person responsible do the right thing.

"I'm not a hateful person. I don't hate you," Zharvellis Holmes said. "But whoever you are, I done prayed upon you, come forth and tell. You're going to slip. You're going to slip and tell somebody. And somebody is going to tell somebody else."

The family told News4Jax they're having a tough time managing the funeral expenses and have set up a fund at Vystar Bank. All donations can be made under Charlotte Bell on behalf of Tony Holmes.
