911 calls released in double murder-suicide outside restaurant

911 called after shots rang out outside Corky's Seafood Restaurant

EAST PALATKA, Fla. – The Putnam County Sheriff's Office released the 911 calls made the night three people were killed in a double murder-suicide outside Corky's Seafood Restaurant.

According to deputies, Johnny Kemp Jr., 30, shot and killed his ex-girlfriend, Detret Burley, 38, and her new boyfriend, Travis Hall, 40, before killing himself.

Several people called 911 after shots rang out shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday. At the time, people didn't know if a shooter was on the loose.

Operator: "911 what is your emergency?"

Caller: "I'm at Corky Bell's, there's been an accident. I think there was gunfire. There's a man calling for help, I'm not over there to see. We need ambulance, we need policemen right here now. Fast. Hurry."

Operator: "We're getting them on the way. Is someone injured?"

Caller: "I don't know, sir. I'm not over there to see. I'm running away from it. Corky Bell's on Highway 17. Hurry please."

In another call, a man who was an EMT for 25 years and also a former policeman was at the scene trying to keep people at a safe distance before officers arrived.

Caller: "There is a gun in the parking lot. I'm protecting the scene now."

Operator: "Where is the gun at in the parking lot?"

Caller: "Right beside one of the victims."

Operator: "Beside one of the victims."

Caller: "I am protecting the scene right now. Get police here. I got guns in the parking lot. I got three people, no vitals. I'm trying to get ... they're unresponsive. I'm trying to protect the scene. I need to get somebody here in a hurry."

Operator: "Yes sir, we have them on the way."

Burley's family told News4JAX she was having problems with her ex-boyfriend. Burley requested a restraining order against him last year, but it was denied because she failed to detail at least two incidents of repeat violence. She left behind five children.
