MIDDLEBURG, Fla. – Some mothers in Clay County have started the process of getting a sex toy store shut down.
The mothers said the shop shouldn't be there because it's right across the street from their children's school bus stop. The store is on Blanding Boulevard in Middleburg.
Bubble gum pinks and baby blues -- it looks like the entrance to a toy store. But it's the kind of toy store, along with its location, that has a few Clay County mothers riled up.
Sara Rennard has two young children and she said every day twice a day her children are able to see the inappropriate eyesore from their bus stop, which is forcing them to grow up too fast.
"It's right across the street from the bus stop. They've got kids from elementary to high school," said Rennard. "When my 6-year-old asks me what sex is and she's 6, so I don't feel as my parental duties that she is old enough to understand what that is."
News4Jax visited the adult toy store and found a sign soliciting sex, buds and hotel rooms. There was also a sign that said, "Call for appointment."
News4Jax called the store, but its voice mail.
"Thank you for calling Sex Store Clay County -- more toys, less crime. Now hiring 18 and up with a proper ID," the voice mail said.
Kari Hill and many other residents hope the city will get involved and enforce regulations.
"She wants to know why she can't go to the toy shop. There were also signs out one day that said 'Girls wanted.' She said, 'Mommy, I'm a girl. Can I go?' And I haven't explained that to them," said Hill.
People who live near the store fear that the shop will lead to prostitution, drugs and sexual crimes. Commissioners will discuss the location and nudity restrictions this month.
Mothers who are against the Clay County Sex Shop have started a petition and more than 700 people have signed it. If you want to sign the petition visit Change.org.
