JSO: Woman shot to death in home

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman was shot to death inside her home on Ribault Terrace near Moncrief Road West, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

The woman's family called police to conduct a well-being check at the woman's home at 3821 Ribault Terrace just before noon Thursday.

When officers arrived they found a woman in her 60s shot dead. Family members said police told them the victim was 65-year-old Marla Henderson (pictured with her 17-year-old granddaughter Tierra George).

The officers saw the woman from the front of the house but backed out when they realized it might be a homicide and called in detectives.

JSO began its homicide investigation after detectives obtained a search warrant.

Family members said Henderson was well-known in her neighborhood, which is why dozens of people arrived at the scene throughout the day. Family members said Henderson was a kind-hearted woman who often allowed other people to live with her in her Northwest Jacksonville home.

"She was a nice person. She opened her heart, her door to anybody," relative Montinique Miller said. "She didn't bother anyone. I hate that this happened. I just wish y'all could find who did this. We're all very hurt on the inside."

Officers said they anticipate being out at the scene for quite some time as they sort through evidence in the investigation. They said the victim's body was taken away by the Medical Examiner's Office.
