FSU football players subpoenaed in De'Andre Johnson punching case

Johnson kicked off team Monday night following release of surveillance video

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – At least five Florida State University football players are being questioned by the state in the case of former quarterback De'Andre Johnson, who was seen punching a woman in a Tallahassee bar.

Johnson was kicked off the team Monday night after the video of the incident was released. Now authorities want to know what was said by Johnson afterward.

Johnson has a case management hearing scheduled for July 22, but any resolution of the case is likely months away.

Subpoenas have now been issued for five FSU football players who were in the Tallahassee bar when Johnson was caught on surveillance video punching a woman in the face. Players Malique Jackson and Wilson Bell were questioned Tuesday. Players Jacob Pugh, Auden Tate and Marvin Saunders will face questions from State Attorney Willie Meggs Friday.

"He left with them and I'm interested in, No. 1, what they saw and what he may have said," Meggs said. "So I am compelling some of them to come in and answer those questions."

The altercation took place in a bar just a block off campus two weeks ago.

Requests for the woman to tell her story continue to go unanswered. Johnson's attorney said his client was provoked when the woman allegedly used the N-word. Meggs said he doesn't buy the claim.

"I've talked to several people who were there, and so far the case doesn't get weaker -- it gets stronger," Meggs said.

Johnson was thrown off the team Monday after the video was released.

FSU President John Thrasher issued a statement Tuesday supporting the decision, saying in part, "I have no tolerance for the behavior exhibited in this case."
