Lake City man hospitalized after car fire on I-95 dies

Tractor-trailer driver pulled 49-year-old crash victim from burning car

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Lake City man who was hospitalized after being pulled from a car that caught fire after crashing on Interstate 95 has died, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded to a burning of a 2005 Ford 500 sedan about 6:45 a.m. July 2 on I-95 just north of Emerson Street.

Henry Bell, 49, was heading south in the inside left lane of I-95 when, for an unknown reason, the sedan moved to the outside right lane, troopers said.

As this happened, the car traveled into the path of a tractor-trailer, entered the outside shoulder and struck a construction crash attenuator. Troopers said the sedan caught fire as a result of the crash.

The driver of the tractor-trailer stopped and got Bell out of the burning car, troopers said.

Bell was taken to UF Health Jacksonville, where he was pronounced dead Thursday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The right and center southbound lanes of I-95 were closed until after 8 a.m.
