Alleged Westside bank robber arrested in Gaineville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said that the man wanted for allegedly robbing the Fifth Third Bank on 103rd Street last month was arrested in Gainesville last Wednesday and is now sitting in a Duval County jail cell.

Robbery detectives said that 26-year-old Pedro Smith of Miami entered the bank at 3:11 p.m. and handed a teller a note saying he had a gun. He was given the cash he demanded, and officers said he left the bank on foot.

Though Sgt. Steve Zona said Smith never showed a weapon, and there were no injuries he is still being charged with armed robbery.

Officials said that Smith was picked up in Gainesville on an outstanding arrest warrant for the robbery and was originally held in the Alachua County Jail before being transported back to Jacksonville while he awaits trial.
