According to the FHP report, Scott Verville was driving north on State Road 13 in a Chevrolet Suburban when a woman driving behind him in a Chevrolet Silverado looked down, taking her eyes off the roadway ahead. The woman, 32-year-old Natalie Ann Woods-Hunter, rear-ended Verville's Suburban, pushing it into oncoming traffic in the southbound lane, FHP said.
The front left of the Suburban hit the left side of a Ford F450 being driven by 54-year-old Justin Becker, of Middleburg. The impact flipped the F450 onto its right side, but Becker suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene, FHP said.
Verville was seriously injured and had to be airlifted to UF Health Jacksonville. Woods-Hunter and her 9-year-old passenger also suffered minor injuries and were taken to Julington Creek Memorial for treatment, FHP said.
The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office and Florida Highway Patrol are investigating the crash.
