While the Cleveland Cavaliers blamed the flu bug for knocking Kyrie Irving out of Sunday's game in Oklahoma City, apparently bed bugs were the actual culprit. The Cavaliers' point guard said following Monday's 96-88 loss to the Detroit Pistons that he left Sunday's victory over the Thunder because he was "freaked out" and tired after being bitten on the head by bed bugs the night before, according to reports from The Associated Press and ESPN.com. "Our team said I was out with flu-like symptoms," ESPN quoted Irving as saying on Monday. "It was honestly from the bed bugs from the frickin' Hilton that we stayed at." The Cavaliers -- and most NBA teams playing road games in Oklahoma City -- stay at the Skirvin Hilton Hotel, the oldest hotel in the city, according to ESPN. ESPN said a spokesperson for the Skirvin confirmed there was an isolated case of bed bugs found in Irving's room and that steps had been taken to remediate the problem. Irving told reporters that he only got three hours of sleep Saturday night after he saw five bugs on his pillow and spent the rest of the night on his room's couch.
He was apparently feeling better by Monday, when he scored a team-high 30 points in the team's loss to the Pistons.
