JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It was a school night for parents at Montclair Elementary School in Orange Park on Monday, to educate them on technology and the hold it seems to have on teens and their cellphones.

From decoding acronyms young people use while texting to understanding who's chatting with your child through social media -- parenting and youth counselor Brian Housman spoke at a community seminar, helping parents understand their children's on-line world.

Other topics at the seminar included, internet pornography, cyber-bullying and online integrity. News4Jax talked to one parent who said she was very thankful for the life lessons.

“I have for the last couple months been following up on it and reading up on it and they need more programs out there for parents to learn and to teach what's going on and what's going on in the children's lives,“ said Julie Harrison.

Housman is based in Tennessee and First Baptist Church of Orange Park sponsored Monday evening’s workshop.
