Candlelight vigil held for woman fatally shot at Ortega Pines Apartments

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A candlelight vigil was held Thursday night for a woman who was shot and killed at Ortega Pines Apartments on Jacksonville's Westside early this year.

Kenya Davis, 42, was fatally shot by someone in her apartment about midnight Jan. 3, police said. Investigators still have no leads on who committed the crime.

Family and friends gathered Thursday evening at 4884 Catoma St., near the apartment complex, to plead to the community for someone to come forward.

"It's hard. That was my firstborn. She was asleep in her bed," said Dorothy Davis, the mother of the victim.

Dorothy Davis said the last 3 1/2 months have been indescribably painful.

"I'm going to keep hope. I'm going to keep praying. I'm going to keep doing whatever I can do to get my name out here," Dorothy Davis said.

Also home at the time of the shooting was the father of Kenya Davis' child, who was also shot, and their 7-year-old son, who was unharmed.

Loved ones and MAD DADDS, an anti-crime group in Jacksonville, want to continue to keep Kenya Davis' name out there with hopes that someone will call in a tip.

At the vigil, tears flowed and candles were lit to symbolize the time she spent on Earth. Dorothy Davis said her daughter was the glue that held the family together.

"Kenya had a heart of gold. She never met a stranger," she said. "She saw the good in everybody."

Dorothy Davis said her daughter didn't deserve to die and she's pleading for the killer to come forward.

"You need to turn yourself in because I want justice," she said. "I'm going to continue to fight."

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
