Police: Homeless man caught stealing machetes

Man, 39, took $175 worth of machetes, knives from Walmart, police say

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A 39-year-old homeless man is accused of stealing over $100 worth of machetes and knives from a Gainesville Walmart, police said.

Terry Roberts is charged with petit theft and resisting arrest, the Gainesville Police Department said.

Police said Roberts, who lives in Dignity Village, a homeless campsite next to the city's homeless center, took $175.50 worth of machetes and knives from the Walmart at 3570 SW Archer Road.

Police said Roberts ran from an officer but was caught a short distance away.

Roberts also has outstanding warrants out of Missouri for felony theft and violation of parole.

He is being held without bond in the Alachua County Jail.
