The Savannah Chatham Metro Police Department Officer escorted the child to a hospital via ambulance.

The child cried when doctors examined him, so Hurst held him, and the boy quickly fell asleep on his chest. The picture of the sleeping child has received thousands of likes on Facebook.

"This job is so much more than just chasing the bad guys. It is about serving the citizens of the communities that you work in and doing what they need you to do," Hurst told Savannah-area TV station WSAV.

The officer, who is also a father, said when he saw the child his instincts just kicked in.

“As a father to small boys, it was just natural to want to soothe this child,” Hurst said. “I didn't expect any of this. It's been quite overwhelming actually.”

The child is now in good condition and safe. No one was arrested.
