ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A 21-year-old man was shot and killed while trying to break into a home on Christopher Street in St. Augustine late Sunday evening, the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said.

He was identified by deputies as Carlos Javon Sanders of Palatka.

Just before 11 p.m., deputies were called to Christopher Street after receiving reports of gunshots. Deputies said they found Sanders dead on the side of the road.

Investigators said they discovered Sanders was one of at least two other people who were trying to break into a home on Christopher Street when someone inside the home fired a gun, striking Sanders. The people inside the home had already left when deputies arrived, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office said it's searching for the people inside the home and anyone else who may have been there at the time of the shooting, so they can be questioned.

As the investigation continues, Major Crimes Unit Detectives have arrested a 35-year-old St. Johns County man on an outstanding warrant on a charge of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. That individual, identified as Jamar Keyon Hamilton, 35, remains in the St. Johns County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 bond.

Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives with the Sheriff's Office. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stopper at 1-888-277-TIPS (8477).
