JUPITER, Fla. – A man was arrested for stealing 107 sea turtle eggs on Jupiter Island, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said.
“Our biologists contacted law enforcement after receiving information about someone poaching sea turtle eggs from a beach behind a residence,” the FWC said in a Facebook post.
Officers said they witnessed a man allegedly taking eggs from a female loggerhead sea turtle as she was laying them.
When the man was arrested he had 107 eggs in his possession, the FWC said.
He was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail and charged with a third-degree felony, which is punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine up to $5,000.
Of the 107 eggs, fifteen were kept in evidence and 92 will be reburied by the FWC biologist.
