Green Cove Springs murder suspects plead not guilty

Deputies: Kolton Shearer, 18, fatally shot in robbery set-up

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – Four suspects have pleaded not guilty in the shooting death of 18-year-old Kolton Shearer during a robbery set-up in July, authorities said.

Prosecutors filed amended charges of second-degree murder against Ozell McNabb, Jordan Coleman, Taurean Johnson, and Alexandra Schreffler.

Schreffler and Coleman appeared in Clay County Court Friday. Schreffler's next pretrial hearing was set for Sept. 7 and Coleman's next court appearance was scheduled for Sept. 12

Johnson and McNabb waived appearance and will both have their next pretrial hearing on Sept. 6.

McNabb and Johnson are further charged with robbery while wearing a hood or mask, according to a new document obtained by News4Jax Thursday.

The charging document said Shearer was also robbed of a small amount of money -- $25 or more -- and an unknown quantity of marijuana.

According to Schreffler's arrest report, Coleman told her to invite some friends over via Facebook who would have money and drugs, so he could rob them.

Coleman told her he didn't have a gun, so McNabb and Johnson were invited to the home where Scheffler and Coleman lived, the Clay County Sheriff's Office said.

McNabb showed a gun to Scheffler, saying he wouldn't hurt anyone unless he had to, the arrest report said.

Investigators said Shearer, Cody David Levo and Tyler Besherse arrived at the home on County Road 16A near Idlewild Avenue about 2 a.m. on July 10.

Besherse got out of the truck, and was confronted by McNabb and Johnson, who were both armed with handguns, telling him to get on the ground.

They approached the truck and Levo was shot in the leg, and then Shearer was shot, deputies said.

Levo survived.

Besherse told deputies that the taller of the two suspects shot Shearer. Johnson is listed as 6-feet tall and McNabb as 5-foot-10-inches.

News4Jax spoke Friday with Shearer's family, who said Shearer, a former standout baseball player for Middle High School, was not dealing drugs and was lured there to be robbed.
