Police: Missing woman found dead in car at Walmart parking lot

Police: Woman found matches description in missing person report

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman who had been reported missing was found dead inside a vehicle in the parking lot of a Walmart in Northwest Jacksonville Wednesday night, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Her family, who had been looking for her, called police about 7:30 p.m. after spotting a car that they thought was her vehicle in the parking lot of the store on Lem Turner Road. Family members said they could smell a strong odor coming from the vehicle.

When officers arrived, they found a white woman inside a Nissan Murano. The woman had been deceased for quite some time, Sgt. Jay Farhat said.

Farhat said it is unknown how long the vehicle had been in the parking lot, but he said investigators will be pulling surveillance video from the Walmart.

The woman, who was reported missing, had last been seen around Aug. 24, Farhat said. The missing person report matches the description of the woman found inside the vehicle, investigators said.

Farhat said they do not suspect foul play, but they are treating it as a homicide investigation until the medical examiner conducts an autopsy Thursday.

The Sheriff's Office has not yet released the woman's name.
