FHP: Bicyclist critically injured in Fernandina Beach crash

Driver of car taken to hospital with minor injuries, troopers say

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. – A bicyclist has critical injuries after being struck by a car Wednesday evening in Fernandina Beach, the Florida Highway Patrol said. 

The accident was reported about 8 p.m. on S. 8th Street at Fir Street.

According to FHP, the bicyclist was crossing the street, but violated the right of way of a green Mazda MX-5 traveling south. The car then hit the bicyclist, troopers said. 

The 59-year-old bicyclist was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with critical injuries.

Troopers said the driver of the Mazda was taken to Baptist Medical Center Nassau with minor injuries. 

Charges are pending investigation, according to FHP.
