Julington Creek residents on edge after rash of car burglaries

Thieves take cash, debit cards, anything of value from unlocked vehicles

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – People living in the Julington Creek west subdivision in St. Johns County are on edge after a rash of car burglaries.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said the burglaries happened between Tuesday night and Thursday morning.

Neighbors told News4Jax that the victims all have one thing in common: They didn't lock their car doors at night.

The Julington Creek neighborhood is so quiet that no one heard thieves going from driveway to driveway burglarizing vehicles -- taking cash, debit cards and anything of value.

Multiple victims lived along Lilac Loop, where the auto burglaries took place.

"There were things out of the glove compartment on the seat and the glove compartment was open. There was cover for a lawn chair on the floor that I had in the truck," Carol Grimes said.

News4Jax asked her if she locked the doors of the truck.

"No, but I am now," Grimes said.

Sam Khosh's car was also burglarized.

"We noticed her violin, my daughter's violin, is missing," Khosh said.

The violin that was stolen is actually a rental worth $900.

News4Jax also asked him if the car doors were locked at the time.

"No. Usually in this neighborhood we don't lock. No, it was open," Khosh said. "From last night on, we will check to see if it's locked. We're not going to leave it open any more, no."

Up the street, crooks broke into a garage where they gained access to another victim's car. Around the corner on Racoon Court, the owner of a car said she not only left her vehicle unlocked, she left $200 inside. The cash was stolen and so was her debit card.

So far, there is no suspect information to go on. Many of the victims that News4Jax spoke with didn't have surveillance cameras.

Numerous victims said that they always felt the community was safe enough to keep their cars unlocked, but now they know that's not the case.
