NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. – A father was charged with child abuse after a tip from the abuse hotline revealed a student at Yulee Primary School had been punched in the face several times for eating cookies without permission, officials said.
Barry Pettway, 37, kept his daughter from attending school for two days because of the injury to her face, deputies with the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.
Pettway is being held on $50,000 bond. The child-abuse charge he faces is a felony.
Child advocates and law enforcement officials didn’t get involved until early last month, according to an arrest affidavit, which also states Pettway threatened his daughter if she told anyone.
The only medication the girl received from her parents was some type of lotion on her injury, the affidavit said.
Both the girl’s parents were at home when she was abused, authorities said.
The family has been placed on a “Safety Plan” and Pettway will not be allowed to stay with his family until the investigation is complete.
