Friends identify man killed in Westside home

Police say women, 2 children inside house during shooting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – One man is dead and another being questioned after a fatal shooting Wednesday night in a home in a neighborhood south of Collins Road.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said calls about gunfire just before 10 p.m. led them to a home on MacNaughton Drive. Officers found a man in his 30s or 40s dead.

Police identified the victim as Christopher Bowman, 39. Brown was known to his friends as Scott.

Officers said they were met outside the home by a man who told them that he was involved in the shooting. A neighbor told News4Jax he saw the man come outside covered in blood and there was a gun left on the hood of a car in the driveway.

"The individual that (the officers) confronted first, he actually was one of the 911 callers," homicide Sgt. Steve Rudlaff said. "First thing he did was advise the officers that he was involved in the situation and he was detained."

That man was taken downtown for questioning and was later released. Police also said a woman and two children were inside the home, but they aren’t sure if they saw the shooting happen. Police said they questioned them and have been released.

Homicide detectives said the victim was shot at least once after some sort of altercation, but they are not sure what prompted the altercation. News4Jax learned there have been police calls about domestic violence at the home, but it wasn't known if the same individuals were involved.

Jeff Wood, who lives across the street and was among those who called 911 Wednesday night, was devastated to find out his neighbor was shot and killed.

"Scott was a good dude. A real good dude," Wood said. "Our kids played together."

Another friend said Bowman lived in the house with his ex-wife after they had recently gotten back together.

"It’s been going on for years," said the friend, who did not want to be identified. "They would get back together, fall apart, get back together, fall apart. And recently he was trying to make it work for his kids, and even proposed to her, and I guess he was going to try again.  And, unfortunately, it didn’t work."

There have been no arrests made in connection with the shooting.
