Students and parents complained that Johnson bullied, berated and belittled band members, and put them through hazing during summer band camp.

During the course of the investigation, Johnson was questioned about a sexual relationship he had with a former student who had graduated. That student was 18 when the sex happened, and Johnson said he didn’t feel bad about it, because the student was of age, according to the school district's investigation notes.
