Navy announces changes in uniform policy for women

Pearl earrings and hair bun worn through a baseball cap now allowed

Women serving in the Navy are now allowed to wear pearl earrings and a hair bun through a baseball cap.

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson announced hair bun policy change on June 8. He said the move came from a question posed by San Diego sailor about the uniform policy.

"Effective immediately you can now wear your cap with the bun through the hole in the back above the strap," Richardson said in a Facebook video on June 8. "I think this will be more comfortable and will look a lot better. Thanks to the Lt. J.G. out there for making that known to me. We promised to fix it and now it's fixed."

The Navy also authorized wearing white pearl or white diamond earrings or their synthetic counterparts with dress uniforms and dinner jackets. The earrings must be between 4 and 6 millimeters in size.
