Deputies: 12-year-old shoots self in hand with gun found in home

Handgun was left in dresser drawer, witnesses tell deputies

MACCLENNY, Fla. – A 12-year-old boy shot himself in the hand Friday with a 9mm handgun in Baker County, according to deputies.

The gun belonged to a close family friend, who does not live at the Quail Lane home where the shooting was reported, according to the Baker County Sheriff's Office.

Baker County emergency personnel transported the boy to UF Health Jacksonville where he is being treated.

The boy, whose name was not released, lives at the Quail Lane home with his mother, four siblings and one nephew -- ages 6 months, 10, 17, 23, and 25 years old, deputies said.

The boy's mother said she did not know the gun was in the home, deputies said.

Witnesses told deputies that the gun had been placed in a bottom drawer of a dresser hidden under some clothing by the 23-year-old sibling, after the gun was left at the home by its owner.

The owner said he left the gun at the home after plans to go to a shooting range in Lake City the previous day fell through. He said he had planned to pick up the gun at a later date, deputies said.

The gun has not been reported stolen, according to a records check, deputies said. No one in the home or the owner of the weapon have any felony convictions.

Deputies are still investigating and said no decisions have been made on whether criminal charges will be filed. They said everyone involved is cooperating with the sheriff's office.

The boy is the sixth to be accidentally shot in Northeast Florida this year.
