Police make arrest after motorcyclist killed in hit-and-run

Driver walks into store near crash scene as police are there reviewing video

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police have made an arrest in a hit-and-run crash that left a 28-year-old motorcyclist dead this weekend, the sheriff's office announced Monday.

Dontai Locklear was heading east on San Juan Avenue about 4 p.m. Saturday when a vehicle made a right turn from Hyde Park Drive into the path of Locklear's motorcycle.

Locklear was taken to a hospital, where he died.

The driver of the vehicle, later identified as 38-year-old James Taylor, walked away from the scene, police said.

Investigators reviewing surveillance video at a store near the crash scene captured Taylor leaving the scene, police said.

While investigators were reviewing the video hours later at the store, Taylor came in and was standing at the counter, wearing the same clothes that he had on in the video.

Investigators approached Taylor and detained him. During an interview with police, Taylor admitted to his involvement in the traffic crash, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Taylor was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a traffic crash involving death and driving with a suspended license causing death.

Locklear's friends and family told News4Jax they're happy an arrest has been made, but it doesn't change the fact their loved one is gone.

"I'm glad they caught the guy because no one should be left to die on the side of the road," said friend Stacey Szyperski.

A memorial has formed at the site of the crash, where many people stopped by Monday to leave candles and photos of Locklear. Among those who visited the memorial was Josh Sandifer, a childhood friend of Locklear.

"He was a good guy," Sandifer said. "I always saw him smiling."

Sandifer said it's undeniable the amount of people who love Locklear, and he hopes his friend's family can have peace.

"I hope they stay strong," he said. "Justice -- they'll get him. He'll serve his time for it."

Locklear's friends and family held a vigil for him this weekend, and a GoFundMe page has been set up to help with funeral expenses.
