WATCH: Florida detective wrangles 9-foot-long anaconda

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It was far from your typical call: A Leon County detective managed to wrangle a 9-foot-long anaconda this week.

Video of the capture has gone viral, piling up nearly 2,000 shares, since it was uploaded to the Sheriff's Office's Facebook page Thursday.

Detective Emily Shaw got the call at some point Wednesday, according to the Facebook post. Fortunately, Shaw was up to the task -- she has experience handling exotic critters.

The detective use a large tree branch to nudge the yellow anaconda so she can reach for its tail. Then she maneuvers the snake into a duffel bag, despite its attempts to snap at her.

"We believe this was someone's pet that either escaped or was released," the Sheriff's Office said in the Facebook post, urging owners of exotic pets to be responsible.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission warns that setting exotic pets free is illegal and likely to result in the animal's death. The FWC has some tips for owners looking to get rid of their exotic pets:

• Find a local hobby group or rescue that may have an adoption program
• See if the pet shop will take it back or accept it as a donation
• Check your local nature centers and museums
• Talk to your local humane society
• Bring it to an Exotic Pet Amnesty Day, or call the FWC's hotline at 888-IVE-GOT1
