The school is secure and law enforcement officers collected the gun, Lake County Sheriff’s Office spokesman John Herrell said. The Lake County school and surrounding area near the Florida’s Turnpike remained on lockdown shortly after the shooting, Herrell said.

“There has been one person injured from a gunshot at Lake Minneola High School. The school is secure at this time, and we have reason to believe it to be a self-inflicted shot,” the Lake County Sheriff’s Office posted on its Facebook about 8:30 a.m. “Lake Minneola High School and others in the area have been placed on lockdown out of an abundance of caution as we continue to investigate. The school is secure, and more updates will be provided as they are available.”

A crisis team, including grief counselors, are being sent to the school, Owens said.

“A Lake Minneola High School student took his life this morning in the bus loop with what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Owens wrote in a statement. “There is no additional threat to students at LMHS or any other school. Law enforcement officers are on the scene at LMHS, and a crisis team, with grief counselors, is being dispatched to the school.”
