Jacksonville firefighters battle flames on the Southside

The Fountains at Deerwood Apartments fire started near roof

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Southside apartment complex caught on fire Saturday evening.

Crews were first called around 7:30 p.m. to The Fountains of Deerwood Apartments on Southside Boulevard near Old Baymeadows Road.

"All I know is that I was coming from work and everything -- all I know is I see my really close friend's house on fire and stuff," said ShaRon Jackson who lives at the apartment complex.

Jackson says his friends were asleep when they woke up smelling smoke. He says his friends didn't know what caused the fire, but they say it started in the roof.

He says his friend's dog was left inside, but firefighters were able to rescue the dog and reunite the dog with its owner.

"They're safe. They're in somebody else's home right now. Their baby is safe. They did have a dog in there for a while but they managed to get the dog out," said Jackson.

According to Fire Rescue, two adults and one child were being assisted by the Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is unknown and the state fire marshal is investigating.
