JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A historic downtown Jacksonville skyscraper begins a new chapter in life Wednesday.
The Barnett Bank building at the corner of Laura and Adams streets has been a landmark downtown since it was built in 1926.
A 450-ton crane lifted 13,000 pounds of ventilation and cooling equipment onto the roof of the Barnett Bank building.
"It's very exciting. We're really proud to be able to help make that happen," said Steve Atkins of Southeast Development Group. "I think this is going to lead to many more great things to come."
This is part of the Barnett Bank and the Laura Street Trio renovation project, which is a $90 million investment to revitalize part of downtown and bring more people to the area.
Construction started last October on the Barnett, the Bisbee building and the Florida Life building which make up the Laura Street Trio.

The project will include something for everyone including retail stores, restaurants, a hotel, loft-style apartments and banking.
The sight of a crane in downtown Jacksonville was seen as a sign of big things to come. This development plan also includes nearly 550 new parking spaces, possibly more. Developers expect those to be complete when the Barnett building opens later this year.
People like downtown business owner Jennifer Morrissey look forward to how this will boost her bottom line.
"My business will probably triple, if not because not just the workers, but after as well," Morrissey said. "This whole city will be revised. Lots of people down here."
