Retired corrections officer accused of shooting wife

Jacksonville woman hospitalized with life-threatening injuries

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after she was shot Monday evening by a man who was believed to be her husband, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Irish Andrews, 52, was arrested and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Officers were sent to the home on Weeping Branch Circle around 7:30 p.m., where they found the woman with multiple gunshot wounds, JSO said. Her name has not been released.

According to the arrest report, Andrews told arriving officers, "The gun is in my right pocket and I'm a retired JSO officer."

Police say a black semi-automatic handgun was removed from Andrews' pocket.

According to police, two children, a minor and an adult, were in the home at the time of the shooting. They were not harmed. The Department of Children and Families was notified of the incident.

News4Jax has confirmed that Irish was a corrections officer. In 2015, he was recognized for 25 years of service with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

News4Jax learned the couple filed for divorce in 2016, but the proceedings were dropped in 2017.

People who know the family said they have lived in the house for less than a year. One man described Andrews' family as picture perfect and the crime Andrews is accused of committing seems out of character.
