Police department says motorcyclist crashed into truck

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. – A motorcyclist died after running into the back of a truck Friday morning, according to Green Cove Springs police.

Investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol said Richard Rooker III, 23, was killed in the crash that took place at U.S. 17 at State Road 16, just west of the Shands Bridge around 7:04 a.m. Officers from the Green Cove Springs Police Department along with Clay County Fire Rescue also responded to the deadly crash.

FHP said they believe Rooker may have been speeding and wasn't able to stop in time for the traffic that slowed in front of him. His motorcycle hit a pickup truck, and he was thrown onto the roadway. He died at the scene.

According to the FHP report, Rooker was wearing a helmet.

The eastbound lanes of SR 16 at US 17 were closed for several hours during the investigation.

Troopers said the driver of the pickup truck did remain on the scene.

Sgt. Dylan Bryan with FHP reminded drivers to keep a safe traveling distance between cars.

“You got to give yourself an opportunity to travel the amount of distance you have going to work and the appropriate amount of time. Leave early, plan ahead, leave yourself some extra time and be patient here on the roadways to get from point A to point B safely,” Bryan said.
