12-year-old hurt after 'metal projectile' hits school bus

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 12-year-old boy was injured after he was struck by a "metal projectile" that came through the window of a Duval County school bus, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

According to Lt. Derek Boucher, the bus was struck just before 5 p.m. on Rogero Road. The bus was carrying students from Mayport Middle School, and the driver pulled in to Lake Luncina Elementary School to investigate.

Boucher said 27 students between ages 12 and 15 were on board the bus. The 12-year-old boy was the only person injured.

Destiny Butler described what it was like being on board the bus.

"They were panicking because he was saying, 'I’m shot. I’m shot,' she said. "So everybody thought it was a real bullet."

The boy, who police did not identify, was treated at the scene and was not taken to the hospital. Investigators believe the bus was hit by either a BB or a pellet, but they were not able to retrieve the projectile.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and Duval County School Board Police are investigating.
