Family renews search for answers 10 years after mother's hit-and-run death

Sister, son of 21-year-old Dana Solomon continue to hold out hope for closure

A family continues to search for answers 10 years after the hit-and-run death of a young mother on Jacksonville's Westside.

Dana Solomon, 21, was walking home from a Kangaroo Express on Normandy Boulevard when she was hit by a small truck and the driver did not stop, according to police. The case is still unsolved.

Her sister and Solomon's son, who was only 1-year-old at the time of her death, are fighting to keep her story alive in hopes that the driver who hit her will have a change of heart and come forward.

"It's very frustrating and it's hard to understand how somebody can do that. No matter what, that's a person. Have a heart," said Heather Speights, Solomon's little sister.

Every November, the family makes a trip together to light candles and pray at the Russell Haven of Rest in Clay County where Solomon was buried a decade ago.

"This marks the 10th year that it happened. It changed our family forever," Speights said. "I wish that she was here and she could see what I've done and how I've done."

Though the case has gone cold, time hasn't numbed the family's plan. Speights said she continues to hold out hope that one day, she and her nephew will get closure.

Solomon's son, 11-year-old Landen Solomon, said he has one request for his mother's killer.

"That they would come forward and not just be silent," he said.

The two family members hope this will be the last year that they need to plead for someone to come forward.

Anyone with information that could help the family get justice in the deadly hit-and-run is asked to anonymously call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
