Relief at the pump: Florida prices dropped 14 cents from last week

Road trips to set records July 4th weekend, AAA predicts

Running on empty could be more costly than filling the tank -- even with high gas prices

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Travelers are seeing some relief at the pump. Florida prices dropped 14 cents from last week.

The state average has now been on a 2-week streak of declines, falling a total of 21 cents per gallon, since setting a new record high price of $4.89/g on June 13th, AAA reports.

On Monday, Florida’s average price was $4.66 -- almost a quarter less than the National Average of $4.89.

The average price in Georgia was $4.40 cents per gallon.

AAA predicts road trips will set new records this July 4th weekend. More than 42 million Americans are expected to hit the road this year. That’s 151,000 more drivers than last year.

Experts said travelers are expected to drive 50 miles or more during the holiday weekend. More than 2.3 million of those will be people in Florida.

“Despite record high gas prices, AAA forecasts 2.3 million Floridians will take a holiday road trip – the most on record, dating back to 2001,” AAA reported.

Although prices have dropped, it will cost around $25 more to fill the family vehicle’s gas tank this year.

Drivers should expect busy roads during the holiday weekend, particularly during Thursday and Friday afternoons, as commuters leave work early and mix with holiday travelers, AAA said.
