The issue of abortion continues as Arizona rules to bring back a long-dormant ban from 1864

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A week after the Florida Supreme Court put an abortion referendum on the November ballot, the Arizona State Supreme Court made another landmark ruling that bans nearly all abortions.

This ruling drastically alters the legal landscape for terminating pregnancies in the state.

Former President and Republican Presidential Nominee Donald Trump said the Arizona ruling goes too far.

“As you know it’s all about state rights...and it will be straightened out, the Governor and everyone else will bring it back to reason and that will be taken care of very quickly,” he said.

Trump also weighed in on Florida’s abortion ballot measure saying he feels Florida will change from the current ban.

Last week, the state Supreme Court upheld the state’s 15-week abortion ban, which also cleared the way for a six-week abortion ban to go into effect next month.

“According to the Biden campaign, they believe Florida is now in play. I don’t know if that’s true, but it clearly makes it more competitive. The abortion issue does matter. President Trump would rather be talking about the border,” News4JAX Political Analyst Rick Mullaney said.

Mullaney said Trump may receive some criticism from his right but his concern is more about electability and moderate voters.

“He has taken some criticism on his right for instance former Vice President Pence. But that is expected. For those legislators in Florida who did the 6-week ban. But for President Trump, he has made the political calculation that he would rather have that criticism but in the end, his base will be with him,” Mullaney said.

Jennifer, a Jacksonville resident, said she does not believe it should be legal to have abortions.

“It’s a hard issue,” she said. “As far as how I vote, it’s just on a person, just how is that person. What are they going through?”

Another person said they didn’t want to comment on the issue but believed “every woman has to do what her body and God tells her,” they said.
