CLEARWATER, Fla. – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis expressed his support Tuesday for a bill that seeks to ban insider stock trading among members of Congress.
During a news conference in Clearwater, DeSantis touted the efforts of Florida’s 13th Congressional District Representative Anna Paulina Luna to end insider stock trading and added that implementing term limits among members of Congress could also help “fix this problem.”
“You have people get elected to Congress having never shown any investment acumen, ever in their life, and then, all of a sudden, they become Warren Buffett on steroids,” DeSantis said. “They’re putting some of the biggest hedge funds in America to shame with these stock trades that have this really suspicious timing.”
The governor is also proposing to have congressional candidates answer a question asking, “Do you intend to trade individual stocks while you’re in Congress?” and said this will help voters make more informed decisions.
“These guys seem to be doing this quite frequently, and they have access to certain information, I believe that is helping to fuel that,” DeSantis said.
Luna, who also attended the news conference, said this bill is all about transparency.
“How could you ever expect members of Congress to truly work for the American people, if this is indeed what they’re doing, and it’s wrong, and it needs to stop,” she said.
