Human bones found in Newberry home's septic tank, sheriff's office says

Medical Examiner, forensic anthropologists confirm remains are human

NEWBERRY, Fla. – Human skeletal remains were found Monday morning in a septic tank at a Newberry home, the Alachua County Sheriff's Office said.

According to the sheriff's office, a woman called Monday to report that the provider servicing her septic tank had found what appeared to be skeletal remains inside the tank.

Investigators responded to the home on Northwest 52nd Place in Newberry and were working to determine if the bones were animal or human, deputies said.

Forensic anthropologists from the University of Florida and the Medical Examiner were called out to assist in the investigation and to help determine the origin of the remains.

They confirmed that the remains are human.

Investigators are working with the 8th District Medical Examiner's Office and members of the UF Pound Lab to gather additional evidence.

The incident is being classified as a death investigation until additional leads can be developed, deputies said.
