Pi Kappa Phi fraternity suspended, members told to cooperate with police

Andrew Coffey died Friday morning at a house where a fraternity house party had been held the night before.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –  A 20-year-old Florida State University student was found dead Friday, the morning after an off-campus fraternity party, the Tallahassee Police Department said.

The student, Andrew Coffey, was found unresponsive at about 10:25 a.m. at a home on Buena Vista Drive, Tallahassee police said. He was given medical treatment at the scene, but died.

Officials have not yet released the cause of death.

Officers said they are interviewing all known witnesses and processing the evidence collected from the scene, including beer bottles strewn around the property.

Coffey, of Pompano Beach, was a pledge to the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. All operations of FSU's Pi Kappa Phi chapter were suspended, and the members of the chapter were directed to cooperate fully with all investigative efforts, the national organization said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the student’s family and friends,” said Pi Kappa Phi CEO Mark E. Timmes in a statement provided to the Tallahassee Democrat. “We appreciate the partnership and support from the Division of Student Affairs during this difficult time.”

FSU's vice president of student affairs, Amy Hecht, released a statement in response to Coffey's death:

We are overwhelmed with sadness any time we learn of the death of one of our students, and the FSU family provides extensive outreach to their family and friends as they mourn the loss of a young life. We do not yet have details surrounding the passing today of student Andrew Coffey, but we will work closely with the Tallahassee Police Department as it investigates to determine the facts surrounding this case.”
