Sun-Ray opening permanent drive-in location

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Sun-Ray Cinemas is opening a permanent drive-in movie theater in Jacksonville.

According to a news release, Sun-Ray is under contract with the owners of 859-869 Willow Branch Avenue to open the location.

The co-owners -- Tim Massett and Shana David-Massett -- have operated the two-screen theater in Five Points for nine years.

The cinema says in the first phase, about 1/3 of the five parcel property will be converted into an outdoor auditorium. It will include a screen measuring 50-feet and a concession trailer.

The lot will park approximately 65 cars per show in phase one.

Co-owner David-Massett says moviegoers will all have a good view of the large movie screen, despite being in a parking lot with other vehicles. David-Masset said, “When you pull up, somebody will come out and say ‘Oh! We’re going to make sure you get to the right spot for your vehicle.’ If you’re in a big tall vehicle, we’ve got a spot for you. if you’ve got a short vehicle, we’ve got a spot for you. It’s NOT behind the big tall vehicle.”

The first film screened at the lot will be Wonder Woman 1984, on January 8th. It starts that evening at 6:00 p.m. Sun-Ray will also screen the 1985 cult classic ‘The Goonies’ later that night, starting at 9:00 p.m.

Co-owners say the showings cost $20 per carload.
