Neighbor says father dies, adult son injured in Oceanway house fire

State Fire Marshal investigating cause of deadly house fire on Water Bluff Drive

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man died and another was taken to the hospital after a house went up in flames Saturday morning in the Oceanway neighborhood.

Fire officials are now working to find out what caused the deadly fire on Water Bluff Drive, near Dunn Creek Road.

Firefighters got the call around 5 a.m. Saturday morning. The flames and smoke could be seen for miles as the home on Water Bluff Drive burned, and hours later, Jacksonville Fire and Rescue personnel were still at the scene.

Neighbors in the tight-knit area were shocked.

“It is sad for me because he’s a real good boy,” neighbor Larry Wise said.

Wise told News4JAX that a father and son lived on the property and the son is disabled.

JFRD personnel confirmed that a person who was disabled and lived in a detached apartment was taken to the hospital from the scene. His condition was not known.

Wise said all he can do is pray and hope for the best for the family, especially the son.

“Hopefully he’s taken care of,” Wise said, adding that he often interacts with the son. “If I walked down the street, he sees me and always says, ‘hello’ and ‘how are you doing?’ I always speak to him and go up to the house and sit with them for 10-20 minutes and talk to him.”

Now the State Fire Marshal’s Office is working to determine the exact cause of this fire.
